Artist’s statement
I’m a printmaker. My works focus on the human nature and nature landscape, I want to express my opinions on some modern people’s behaviors and discuss the relationship between man and his environment in my creations . My printmaking works have a graphic, sketchbook-like quality that includes characters and imageries derived from my interests deeply-rooted in Pop art and traditional European printmaking art. My works tend to be on small traditional print like relief intaglio prints or big printstallation works. I enjoy making relief and intaglio works and I also believe those are concerned with the basic skills mastered by a printmaking artist through daily hard efforts. Furthermore I am also interested in printstallation (printmaking+installation art). Yayoi Kusama’s works give me some inspiration. I realize this is a new way to let people appreciate printmaking works because most traditional print works are created in a two-dimention way, by which the viewer does not need to be concerned about the environmental impact. But printstallation is different. The viewer must work around it and then collect information from different angles, considering how environment works. In my opinion, compared with the traditional ways, the concept of printstallation is powerful and playful.
As for the process of composition, before working , I will spend a week making a plan and preparing materials, working out a schedule, and matching colors. While working, I constantly think about composition. Do the elements appear in this work as reasonable as they actually do ? Should I add more elements to it? Should I repeat the same pattern? I think asking questions is a good approach to improve my works. My prints tend to be landscape. I use a variety of visual textures to affect the viewer with the emotion I mean to convey. My works utilize dramatic composition and high contrast.
